Hey guys,

I've been trolling for a while. Awaiting my built badlands squatch, and we're now in the 4th delivery window change/update. Fingers crossed for delivery in January. I've been waiting since summer of 2020, so another few weeks won't likely kill me.

My first mod will be to wire my radar detector either to the mirror or an aux switch.

I searched on here to see if anyone has done it, and I didn't find anything. There are some comments about wiring usb dash cams, which are helpful, but not exactly what I'm looking for. There are a notes about this on other non-BN forums, but I'm not going to join them when the real experts are here.

Any thoughts / pics / advice on this>\?

Thanks.

I haven't done one on my Bronco yet (2 days old), but I've been pretty happy with setups from Blendmount.com in the past. I did one in my C7 vet years ago. Nice clean setup for a mirror mount and wire tap into the mirror. Good Luck!

I connected mine to Aux switch 6. I then spliced the wire for Aux 6 Yellow/Orange wire, located under the hood rear drivers side of engine compartment to Gray/Orange wire in same location. The other end of the Gray/Orange wire can be found behind the passenger side kick panel. From there I ran the power wire for the radar detector up the side and forward edge of the dash to the location I mounted the detector.

Aux switch and pre-run wire information can be found in the owners manual.

Good Luck

A device popularized in the 70s and 80s by truck drivers to detect police radar and avoiding speeding tickets.

Well it scans for any radar detection/ signature your Bronco may be emitting, thats why I opted for the Lux package which includes a stealth coating.

Do people actually still use radar detectors? I haven't owned one since probably the late 80s early 90s. Funny I got more speeding tickets when I had one. Lol

I believe there is a wire for the aux switches somewhere along the top of the windshield for lights or light bar addition… would be an easy tap for a fuzz buster.

Ohhhhhhh... yup... I honestly forgot about those. I just assumed it was some enhancement for Adaptive Cruise Control or something fancy.

Lol. I get it. Okay, boomer.

I will admit that the overwhelming use of radar bands for such things as blind-spot detection (not to mention cops using laser) have rendered the device somewhat obsolete. However, I like my old school unit, and that coupled with reports on Waze, I usually am not surprised by a speed trap.

Anyhoo - thanks to those who provided insight (especially saveup). I don't expect to be driving my bronco much more than +10 from the speed limit, but I really hate paying tickets for those times I get a little heavy-footed.

Big time, in my recent 5k trip through the southwestern US, it saved me 5 speeding tickets. Well worth the jnvestment.
As most police forces use speeding tickets as a form of revenue generation, vs correcting bad drivers, I appreciate not giving them my hard earned dollars.

Millennial actually... well... borderline Gen X/Millennial I guess. ?

I do remember a handful of people having those in their car when I was growing up in the 1980s/1990s. I just don't typically speed because I have an uncontrollable addiction to cruise control, and when I'm not using cruise control I follow whatever traffic is doing. I put as little thought into how fast I'm going as possible.

It probably also helps that I drive a manual, have to be a little more aware of your engine RPM (and therefore—indirectly—your speed) with a manual than you do with an automatic.

Around town no but on roadtrips yes...we still use radar + laser detector.

Valentine1 & Escort are great brands but the best models are hardwired, hidden, and with full front/rear detection.

Some car dealerships in the southeast still preload them on cars...and we wish more would hold onto this 80s-90s oldschool fuzz bust detection!! Who needs WAZE lol

We used to have detectors and scrambler both hardwired in our vehicles 20+ years ago...helped A LOT! Now adays though no scramble and we just mount it on glass around rearview mirror so it blends in mostly undetected to the naked eye...minus the power cord :)

*Keep in mind radar detectors are illegal in some states. Maybe even my own haha

I had a radar detector hard wired in my Catfish Camaro I ran a wire from the ACC circuit so it automatically turned on when I started it up. Mounted it way up high above the mirror so it was not visible from outside. Haven’t used one since I sold that car in 99. It was always helpful even when not speeding when it sounded I always checked my speed.

I use the mirror tap too. Been using a radar for many years and this is my only V1 I bought in 2005. V1 offered an upgrade to the latest version 4 years ago.

Use my radar detector a lot and it has saved my butt many times. Indiana state police and local counties love to write some tickets. I have a Uniden DFR7 and really don't have too much interference from blind spot, and none from grocery stores, etc. I generally run about 10 over on the interstate but have been known to push a little faster. But it really serves to keep me honest. It alerts me if I go 20 over, and has a 'stay awake' feature that helps keep you alert. Also has gps-based red light camera notifications.

Here's the solution I came up with:

Also -- if you don't want to try doing a mirror tap, you can pick up one of these cool gizmos. This is what I'm using for my dash cam:

I have been using the Uniden R3 for a couple years now. Had a detector back in early 90s but the new R3 is a whole different ballgame. It was a learning curve watching YouTube videos and reading detector forums on correct programming. Once you put in a few hours figuring it out, it is awesome. 90% of the trash/false signals are filtered out. If I get a KA band in mid 30's, I know it's the real deal. I have it programmed for my area in city mode, and HWY mode for travel. I have it mounted right up next to rear view mirror post in the center and tapped into mirror. The Uniden R3 along with Waze on trips keep me safe. On long straights I can catch a signal 3 to four miles ahead.
